The
first reported sharia killing by Islamists in northern Mali took place
on Sunday when an unmarried couple was stoned to death in Aguelhok.
Since they occupied the area, the Al-Qaeda linked Islamist group has
been putting a lot of up pressure on the interim government of President
Dioncounda Traore.
This
execution is coming against the backdrop of the interim government’s
finalizing of the process of forming a unity government – an action
which foreign partners have demanded of it, latest by Tuesday, in order
to be able to take decisive action against the jihadists who have
divided the nation into two.
Meanwhile,
as the country’s leaders grappled for solutions to the crisis in the
nation, the Al-Qaeda linked Islamist grew bolder, dragging a rural
couple to the center of the town of Aguelhok on Sunday for a public
stoning.
According
to a local government official who spoke on condition of anonymity, “I
was there. The Islamist took the unmarried couple to the center of
Aguelhok. The couple was placed in two holes and the Islamist s stoned
them to death… The woman fainted after the first few blows.” Information
also has it that the couple had two children the youngest of which was
six months old.
